I’M TRACE, YOUR WEEKLY GUIDE TO THE STARS.
WAS YOUR RESOLUTION TO STARGAZE# MORE THIS YEAR?
WE LOVE THAT!
HIT THE DARKNESS AT TEN PM - WHEN UNDER THE# SKY THE BOTTOM IS THE HORIZON.
THE TOP IS ZENITH.
EVERYTHING IN THE SKY MOVED# EXCEPT THE NORTH STAR!
TO FIND IT, LOOK NORTHEAST FOR THE BIG# DIPPER.
IT LOOKS LIKE THIS.
THE BIG DIPPER IS REALLY EASY TO SPOT, BUT IT’S NOT ACTUALLY A CONSTELLATION!
IT’S# AN ASTERISM - LIKE.
A KNOWN SHAPE.
IT’S PART OF THE CONSTELLATION URSA MAJOR, THE GREAT BEAR - A CONSTELLATION# IS AN OFFICIAL GROUP OF STARS.
THE TWO STARS AT THE END OF THE DIPPER# ARE MERAK AND DUBHE.
USING THOSE, DRAW AN ARROW - LIKE THIS -# TO POLARIS, THE NORTH STAR, THE NORTH STAR IS PART OF URSA MINOR -# WHICH ALSO HAS A LITTLE DIPPER.. SEE?
NOW YOU CAN FIND YOUR BEARINGS ANYWHERE UNDER# THE SKY.
TWO CONSTELLATIONS!
YOU’RE DOING GREAT.
